Paint Me In The Sunlight

After we’d recorded Some Things Never Change & The Big Sky, I knew I had to make a full project. There were a handful of other songs that had stuck with me over the years but this one wouldn’t stop singing to me in the night. I kept waking up hearing “stay, won’t you stay” but it took me a couple tries to figure out what song it was (it’d only been 7 years since we wrote it). I’d skip it every time it started thinking it was the wrong song but when I finally listened down, I knew we had to put it on the EP.

This song comes from such a specific place in my memory. Tony & I were hiking through a field of wildflowers, surrounded by mountains. We were a couple months into dating & I was already so in love with him & the adventurous life I was getting to live because of him. It was a quintessential summer day. I remember telling myself to take a picture in my mind, to not forget the scenery & the way I felt so full of happiness. I’d done that a hundred time before (and a hundred times since) knowing it probably wouldn’t stick, but it did.

Kim Richey helped bring that moment into a song in the middle of winter in Nashville back in 2014. I’ve loved revisiting songs from another season in my life about experiences from an even earlier chapter for this project. Songs are like memories, they’re time machines & hopefully if you craft them right, they’re timeless too.

Lyrics

Paint me in the sunlight of a perfect summer day

Just before it slips away from view

Golden in the half light, smiling at the mystery

Exactly where I wanna be, with you

We'll save the memory to keep us warm

Something to chase away the darkness & weather a storm

Hold on, hold on, hold on to this moment

Never let go, let go of this feeling even when the sun sets & the music fades

Hold on, hold on, hold on to this moment

Never let go, let go of this feeling stay, won't you stay

Kiss me in the moonlight in a way I won't forget

We can leave the words unsaid for now

We'll save the memory to keep us warm

Something to chase away the darkness & weather a storm

Hold on, hold on, hold on to this moment

Never let go, let go of this feeling even when the sun sets & the music fades

Hold on, hold on, hold on to this moment

Never let go, let go of this feeling stay, won't you stay, stay, won't you stay

Paint me in the sunlight of a perfect summer day
